Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian mix of dance, fight, music, song, tradition, theatre and more. Capoeira originated from West African tribal dances and developed in the context of slavery in Brazil. African slaves would train to fight for their freedom whilst disguising the movements as traditional dances. Nowadays people from all over the world, and from all different backgrounds practice capoeira, and it is an excellent way to keep fit, develop self-confidence and meet new friends. Tuition is available in martial arts of European origin, concentrating upon fencing with a small-sword and back-sword also extending to pugilism and touching upon Edwardian self-defence techniques. The training is suitable for men and women, and is taught by insured and certified instructors. Equipment is provided for students who are beginners.

Oxford Contact Dance organise classes and dance sessions for contact improvisation. We welcome both beginners and experienced dancers.
Contact improvisation is a dance which originated in the 1970's and which has now spread throughout the world. It's often taught in university dance courses but it's easy to learn and fun. It's an improvised dance - a dialogue in movement - which has a fluid and dynamic form, and it's social dancing; not stage dancing.
